The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines is a beginner to intermediate level qualification exploring wines, suitable for industry professionals and wine enthusiasts.
This qualification is intended for beginners wishing to learn about a wide range of wines or those seeking to build on the introductory knowledge gained with the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines. You’ll gain knowledge of the principal and regionally important grape varieties of the world, the regions in which they are grown, and the styles of wine they produce. Through a combination of tasting and theory, you’ll explore the factors that impact style and quality and learn how to describe these wines with confidence.
Fully delivered online, 16 hours of tutor led tuition and support with the final exam taken in college (option also available to take exam in your own home for an increased fee).
Level 2 - £375 per student (£240 payable to the college and students must order wine samples themselves, at the approx. cost of £135 (we will provide guidance as to how to do this).
Dates – Mon 12th Oct to Mon 14th Dec 2020 – 2pm to 4pm (9 weeks excluding Mon 19th Oct). The exam is in week 9.

- How to taste and describe wine using the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT)
- How environmental factors, grape-growing, winemaking and maturation options influence the style and quality of wines made from eight principal grape varieties:
- Chardonnay
- Pinot Grigio/Gris
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Riesling
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Merlot
- Pinot noir
- Syrah/Shiraz
- The style and quality of wines
- Principles and processes involved in the storage and service of wine
- Principles of food and wine pairing
There are no entry requirements but you must be of legal drinking age in this country - however, this is not a barrier to successfully completing the course

How the course is assessed

A one-hour closed-book examination comprised of 50 multiple-choice questions. This will be held in Edinburgh college on Dec 14th but WSET now offer remote invigilation which means that candidates can sit the exam in their own home for a small additional fee, providing they have a suitable computer, smart phone/tablet with camera and Wi-Fi). This makes it possible to join and complete this course from outside of Edinburgh, with no need to travel.

Students must bring 6 ISO wine tasting glasses with them to each online tutorial (approx. £15)

On successful completion of the examination, you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.
Students who successfully pass the level 2 Award in Wines can
apply for the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines
- 1 day per week for 9 weeks (on-line delivery with the exam being held in College on the last day (option also available to enable you to be sit the exam in your own home for an additional fee)
- Time 2-4pm
