Cut your costs, increase your productivity & improve staff morale

Sounds too good to be true, but it’s not. Jewel & Esk College offer you an opportunity to:

  • Cut your recruitment costs
  • Raise your profile among potential recruits
  • Resource special projects
  • Provide management experience for existing staff
  • Increase staff morale

You can achieve all this, and more, by taking a student from Jewel & Esk College on work placement. Here’s how it works.

Using placements for busy periods

A student can be a vital extra pair of hands when you need them. They may also be available at times of the year when you need help the most, increasing your productivity. Work placements can be flexible to meet the needs of your organisation.

Using placements to free up your staff time

Why not bring in a placement student to carry out some of the workload of your permanent staff? In this way you can free up these staff to focus on other aspects of your business.

Using placements as part of the recruitment process

The majority of our students who go out on placement are offered jobs by their placement provider at the end of their course. Why? Well, it’s partly the quality of our students, but it’s also because businesses can use student placement as a “try before you buy” scheme. It gives you an opportunity to evaluate a particular student’s skills, attitude and personality; to determine whether or not they’re a “good fit” with your organisation. Many companies find that in this way they can avoid the normal recruitment costs and be sure of what they’re getting – which is a new recruit who knows your business and can hit the ground running!

Even if you don’t recruit the student who’s been with you, participating in the placement programme raises your profile amongst our entire student body and increases the likelihood that our highly-qualified and experienced students will apply for your vacancies.

Using placements for special projects

Many businesses have things they’ve always wanted to do, if only they had the time and resources. Bringing in a student on placement to finally get to work on that project can be hugely beneficial. A student placement can enable you to go beyond “business as usual” to achieve real competitive advantage.

Using placements to benefit existing employees

Our student on placement will need supervision and a degree of mentoring. Many employers have found that the employee who takes on this role benefits as much as the student. It increases their sense of worth, their pride in their job and their awareness of their own skills and abilities. In other words it is great for their morale and can be a useful way of providing employees with their first leadership and management experience.

Using placements to bring fresh ideas

A student can bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm and a new perspective into your organisation. They will be learning new techniques and approaches from their lecturers at college and can bring these ideas to invigorate your organisation.

Do I have to pay the student?

No.

What support will I get?

We’ll support you all the way. We’ll draw up a contract with you, defining the placement student’s role and duties. As part of that contract we provide you with a named individual at Jewel & Esk College whom you can contact at any time. We also set out the type and frequency of regular contact from the College. If, for any reason, the placement is not working out it can be terminated immediately. This normally affects only a tiny minority, if any, of our placements, but it is there as a safeguard for your peace of mind. At the end of the placement you’ll normally get a feedback report from the student, which can be full of useful insights to help your business.

Work Placement Assessors

Students are allocated a dedicated workplace assessor. The assessor is responsible for supporting the student in the workplace with any related work placement tasks or assessments.
