Money Matters

Our advisors are happy to discuss your individual circumstances, help you with a financial “health check” and budgeting advice and to advise you on how to apply for funds.  Some of the funds you may be able to apply for include:

  • tuition fees
  • bursaries & EMAs
  • loans
  • discretionary (hardship) funds
  • childcare funds
  • expenses and benefits

The Scottish Funding Council has some general information on criteria for eligibility on its website, but to get a clearer picture about what you might be entitled to, please contact our Student Services team on 0131 344 7163.

We produce a range of information leaflets, which you can either download or pick up from Student Services.

Tuition fees

Students studying full time for HNCs or HNDs at a Scottish college and who live in Scotland will normally have their tuition fees paid by SAAS. Students must apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland to have their tuition fees paid, on an annual basis.Students studying full time courses below HN level will normally be covered by the national fee waiver policy, providing they meet the criteria.

Bursaries

Generally, to be considered for bursary funding you should:

  • Have no alternative source of support
  • Be past your school leaving date
  • Be attending (or have applied to) a Scottish FE college
  • Be attending (or have applied for) a course below Higher National level
  • Be ordinarily resident in Scotland

Other conditions also apply.

Jewel & Esk College bursary and hardship funds are limited, and sometimes are not large enough to support every eligible student.  We will consider all eligible applicants but may give priority to those who need financial help most.

Financial support may also be available for living costs and other specific costs such as childcare or travel.  This support is usually means tested.

Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMAs)
An EMA is a weekly payment made to young students aged 16 or 17 who have left school and are studying a full time course below HNC level.  There are also two bonuses of £150 for students who remain on their course and meet the requirements set out in their Learning Agreement. An EMA is assessed on household income.

If you are 18 you may be assessed for a bursary (this would mean that you get a higher allowance than an EMA). Please contact us for advice.

You should apply as soon as you have been offered a place on a course. A EMA/bursary application form will be sent out with your letter of offer. The application will give more detailed advice on the information and documentary evidence we required to process your application.
Student Services can advise you on what to apply for, how to complete the form and what supporting documentation you may need. We are open throughout the summer.

All students under 18 are eligible for essential kit and travel (if outwith a 2 mile radius) regardless of parental income.
