Continuing at college
If you want to stay at Jewel & Esk to do another course, we can help with information on financial support for study and childcare. Depending on which course you want to do, funding can be very different. For example, funding for students on HNC or HND courses is very different from bursary/EMA funding. We are here to guide you through what is funding is available and how to apply.
Check out course information from Jewel & Esk College at www.jec.ac.uk or call in to the Information Office to pick up a College Course Guide.
If we don't offer the right course for you, check out other colleges at Scotland’s Colleges. http://events.scotlandscolleges.ac.uk/list_scotlands_colleges.
Going to university
If you are thinking of going to university, you must plan early! Most Jewel & Esk students need to complete their applications before Christmas to allow tutors to add their reference in time for the 15 January 2010 closing date. Applications received by UCAS after this date (except for applications to art and design courses with a 24 March deadline) will only be considered if universities have places available. The final closing date is 30 June 2010.
First of all, consider whether university is right for you. Our resource pack 'Studying at University - a resource pack for Jewel & Esk students' covers topics such as funding and childcare, prospects for graduates, starting university, expanding on skills acquired at college and understanding university jargon.
Then you need to decide which university you should apply to. Look at university websites or at their prospectuses. Link to our local universities below or click on UCAS for links to other UK universities and lots more useful information.
The University of Edinburgh
Edinburgh Napier University
Queen Margaret University
Heriot Watt University
Once you have decided on a shortlist of universities, visit them. Most universities have Open Days advertised on their website. Most open days take place between September and November, but some can be earlier. Missed the Open Day? Contact the Faculty/Department you’re interested in direct and ask if you can visit.
If you still need help to decide, call in to Student Services and ask to see the Careers Adviser. Careers drop in times at Student Services Edinburgh:
• Tuesday 12noon - 1pm
• Wednesday 12 noon – 1pm
Or email your questions or requests for an appointment at Edinburgh or Midlothian Campus to careers@jec.ac.uk.
