The Centre for Built Environment & Sustainable Energy is based at Midlothian Campus. Students work in a range of specialist workshops, and with highly experienced and motivated staff.
At Midlothian Campus, we are now working to establish Scotland's first solar meadow array. This “outdoor classroom” will be an excellent environment for our students to become familiar with the latest solar technology, and findings from staff and student research into their operation and their interaction with plants and wildlife will feed into the industry. The panels will also generate enough power to take Midlothian Campus off the grid. Students in this Centre will have the chance to work with a range of renewable technologies, including installation and maintenance of air source heat pumps, supplied by Ferroli.
The Centre for Built Environment & Sustainable Energy offers courses in the following specialisms:
Electrical Engineering
Our students work in classrooms and specialist workshop areas, using industry standard equipment including test rigs. We train to 17th Edition standard. As well as a range of full time courses, we also offer bespoke short courses to help keep the workforce up to date. Please contact us for details.

Jewel & Esk College offers sector leading delivery for apprentices. Our apprentices come from small firms and well known larger organisations across Edinburgh and the Lothians. We have an excellent track record of our students’ success in competitions, producing winners and highly placed entrants in national competitions such as SATTT (Scottish Association of Timber Trade Teachers). One of our previous students held the prestigious title of Scottish Adult Apprentice of the Year, from across all trades.

The Centre for Community Engagement works with communities across East Lothian, Midlothian and Edinburgh.
A specialist schools team works with schools to develop vocation skills with pupils at all levels. Some courses are offered in college as part of the timetable. We also collaborate with schools from primary level upwards on a range of project work.
Our community programme offers opportunities across the region. As a “college without walls” students can access the curriculum from the community, either through distance learning, or through courses delivered in various community venues. We have a programme of courses and workshops at Hibernian Learning Centre at Easter Road and also at the Pennypit Centre in Prestonpans.

For students from special provision or from mainstream schooling with additional support needs,we offer a range of Bridging Courses, to develop skills and build confidence. Some courses include a work placement and most involve participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

There are approximately 600 students enrolled on full time courses within the Centre and 90% of them have a positive destination whether it is to progress to the next level of study or to find work in an area related to the course. The courses we run are accredited either by Skillset or mapped to National Occupation Standards (NOS) so that the skills you develop at college will be the right ones for preparing you for work in the Industry. CRE:8 is the space where all this happens and is undoubtedly one of the best equipped centres in the UK. We have the latest software for music production, television, animation and design. There are 8 recording studios, 6 TV edit suites, 2 TV Studios (one with a green screen), 15 music practice rooms and a 96 seat auditorium for music, theatre, cinema and conference events. We have 8 further computer suites individually configured with the latest software. We work in partnership with local businesses or professionals to enhance the quality of the student learning experience through “Knowledge Transfer” projects. These opportunities are embedded throughout the courses and range from producing short promo videos to creating websites for clients around the world. We are always looking for interesting projects or ideas which allow our lecturers to train, work in partnership with or deliver a product or service for clients. Equally we are keen to engage with professionals in the Creative Industries to deliver specialist master classes to our students. The student experience has been greatly enhanced by the many projects we have developed over the past few years. Students will leave not just with valuable SQA qualifications but with a portfolio of innovative work produced for a real purpose. |
