We make it as easy as possible to cycle to work. Select a bike, plus any related equipment (e.g. lights, helmet, waterproofs, reflective clothing, locks, luggage carriers etc), from Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative, up to a maximum of £1,000. The college then buys the bike and equipment and leases all this back to you via a salary sacrifice scheme over an 18 month period, saving you tax. This scheme is open at certain times throughout the year.
If you are not entitled to corporate healthcare, you may opt to join the Cash Health Plan. Payments are deducted from your salary before tax and the cost depends on the package you choose.
Give As You Earn charity donation scheme
Our Give as You Earn Scheme lets you nominate a chosen charity and authorise deductions directly from your salary to your charity of choice. Donations are deducted before tax, meaning you save the tax you would have paid on this amount.
The college will pay your nominated childcare provider (who must be a registered provider) direct from your salary and before tax is deducted. You can opt to pay up to £243 per month and there is no qualifying period. As the deduction is before tax the saving is considerable.
Jewel & Esk has an amazing health spa with gym, pool and a range of fitness classes. Staff can join at a reduced membership rate.
This is a savings scheme and loan provision scheme, run by a Not for Profit member-owned (mutual), financial services co-operative. Payments are taken directly from your salary. Find out more at www.capitalcreditunion.com .

Family Care Commitments Policy
Jewel & Esk offers a range of leave for its staff, depending on individual circumstances, for example parental leave; compassionate leave; maternity, paternity and adoption leave; and unpaid leave. College staff have benefited from a range of flexible working options including job-sharing; part-time working; compressed hours; sessional working; voluntary-reduced working time; working from home and career breaks. These options are available depending on your individual circumstances and with agreement from your manager.
The college operates a generous occupational sick pay scheme, giving staff access to sick pay when unable to work due to ill health. The amount paid varies depending on your length of service.
Organisational focus on health & welfare
Jewel & Esk has achieved the bronze standard for Healthy Working Lives, which demonstrates our commitment to a happy, healthy workplace environment for all staff.
See Me – we signed the ‘See Me' Pledge in May 2009. This is a college wide commitment to inform and educate about mental health issues. We aim to reach a stage where the values and lessons of See Me are firmly embedded across the College.
Two Ticks - Jewel & Esk has also officially recognised its fair treatment of disabled employees by signing up to the Disability Two Ticks scheme in April 2009. Two Ticks’ demonstrates an employer’s commitment to being Positive About Disabled People. It affirms the college as having good disability employment practices and recognising that excluding disabled people from the workplace could mean missing the best person for the job. On a practical level ‘Two Ticks’ reflects the College’s commitment, when recruiting, to interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for any job vacancy. The commitment to disabled employees extends throughout the term of employment to include at least annual reviews of the support and development mechanisms in place for each. All employees benefit from the college’s undertaking to make every effort to keep an employee in employment should they become disabled.
